ROSS’ TOP 40 ALBUMS OF 2011

#12
DUM DUM GIRLS Only in Dreams
Song-by-Song Rating: 7.40 (9th)
Last.fm Plays: 131 (40th)
Featured Song: “Coming Down”

I’m a big fan of Kristen Gundred’s first band Grand Ole Party…and after their quick demise, I wasn’t enthused by what was coming from Gundred’s new band Dum Dum Girls (namely the debut album I Will Be).

That all changed this year, first with the release of the stellar He Gets Me High EP in the spring and then with Only in Dreams late in the summer.

Only in Dreams not only features a huge upgrade in the band’s sound quality, but also songwriting and Gundred’s presence as a front woman. My only gripe is that many of the drum beats sound exactly the same, but that’s a minor problem.

Standout Tracks: “Bedroom Eyes”, “Heartbeat”, “Caught in One” and “Coming Down”

DUM DUM GIRLS “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”

I’ve been reluctant to buy into Dum Dum Girls because I was so disappointed in the demise of Kristen Gundred’s previous band Grand Ole Party.

A couple of releases into the new band, I’m on board. A Smiths cover doesn’t hurt, either.
