BOWERBIRDS “Tuck the Darkness In”

I’m a longtime fan of North Carolina environmental folkies Bowerbirds and can’t wait to hear their third album The Clearing, which is set to be released in March.

This track points to an expanded, more full-bodied sound for the band, which should be interesting.

Ginger and I drove to Austin to see Bowerbirds last night.

It was a chilly outdoor show at the Mohawk, which is pretty far removed from the super-hot indoor show they played at the Mohawk last August.

The crowd was huge and great. The band really seemed grateful to see so many people there.

Overall, pretty great.

Setlist: Hooves / Teeth / In Our Talons / Silver Clouds / Dark Horse / Matchstick Maker / Beneath Your Tree / La Denigracion / The Ticonderoga / Chimes / House of Diamonds / Northern Lights / Crooked Lust / Tell My Why (Neil Young cover with Julie Doiron)

Seeing Bowerbirds tonight at the Mohawk in Austin.
Very excite.

ROSS’ TOP 29 ALBUMS OF 2009

#8
BOWERBIRDS Upper Air
Featured Song: “Crooked Lust”

I was ready to put Bowerbirds’ first album Hymns for a Dark Horse on my top albums of 2008 list…then I found out it was released in 2007. Ugh.

This time, I’m getting it right and including the equally-great Upper Air on my 2009 list.

The band’s sound is expanded a little bit on this album, but not too much. The songs are still simple and poignant.

ROSS’ TOP 29 SONGS OF 2009
#9 Bowerbirds “Northern Lights”

Such a sweet, beautiful song from Bowerbirds, who churn out tons of sweet and beautiful songs.

The vocal harmonies and touches of piano really make this song for me.

Bowerbirds - Tiny Desk Performance →

Streaming video of a great office show from Bowerbirds.

olivehearts:

Our visit to the desk of Bob Boilen at NPR during our summer tour is finally online!

It captures a unique, one tour only, group of players: Beth and Phil, plus Mark Paulson and Brad Cook on violin, upright bass and that big bass drum.

It was fun, and a bunch of NPR staff stood around and watched us play, so it was like a real show.

Bowerbirds @ the Mohawk

I saw Bowerbirds at the Mohawk in Austin last night and they were pretty damn good. The sound was clean and great and the songs (of course) were fantastic.

For whatever reason, the show was held in the inside venue, which was completely packed and really hot.

It was great to finally see them, even though I was incredibly tired.

Bowerbirds - Daytrotter SessionBowerbirds are back for another Daytrotter Session.

This one features three songs from the new album Upper Air, which I still have to check out, and one song from the fantastic Hymns for a Dark Horse.

BowerbirdsEven though I’m about to go to the LSU-Ole Miss game and get reasonably drunk, the weather has me in a Bowerbirds kind of mood.

Here’s their Daytrotter Session recorded around this time last year. It’s pretty good.
